Monteith renovations move forward, set for August 2016 completion

After much delay, the Henry Ruthven Monteith building renovation is in full swing with an expected completion date of August 2016.

The $25-million project includes the cost of building materials, architect’s fees, furniture, fixtures and equipment, audio-visual, security and technology installations.

The renovations will add another 25 years of life to the building, according to the University of Connecticut spokesperson Stephanie Reitz.

‘Pink Tie Affair’ Spreads Message that Disease Impacts Everyone

Students, faculty and families gathered in a powerful display of reflection and hope during a breast cancer awareness fundraiser called The Pink Tie Affair.

Hosted by the UConn Chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) and Travelers EDGE, the most touching moment of the Oct. 16 evening was when members of NABA and the audience shared their personal stories of how breast cancer has taken their loved ones.

Workforce Recruitment Day provides networking opportunity for students with disabilities

The Workforce Recruitment Day on Oct. 19 is the closing of an application process for students with disabilities to connect with employers in federal and private sectors.

Full-time undergraduate students with disabilities or recent graduates can seek guidance from the centers to find a job.

The Center for Career Development and the Center for Students with Disabilities works with the Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP) to place students into permanent or temporary jobs.

Five Reasons We Miss “Mad Men”

We all have that favorite T.V. show. Whether it be a children’s show, a drama or a comedy, our favorite shows never fail to lift us up. However, eventually these shows must come to an end. One classic example of this is the show “Mad Men,” which concluded in April.

The series was set in the 1960’s, and starred Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss, Vincent Kartheiser and Christina Hendricks. The show followed the main character, Don Draper, and the other self-titled “Mad Men,” and their work in an advertising agency in New York City on Madison Avenue. Classy Interview: Meet Sydney Coelho, Hofstra University Music Education Major

Some people know from the very beginning what they want to do professionally. For Sydney Coelho, her passion became her work. A junior music education student at Hofstra University, Coelho has spent years playing the piano and singing. When she realized that teaching would be the perfect opportunity to showcase her skills, she found her calling in Hofstra’s music program. College Lifestyles™ had the chance to talk with the classy Sydney about her involvement at Hofstra.

College Lifestyles™: What groups or organizations do you belong to at school?

Sydney Coelho: I’m vice president of a group at school called NAFME. It’s the National Association for Music Education. We sponsor events for music groups along Long Island. I’m also vice president of my a Capella group called Hofbeats. I was just hired as manager of the university stage crew. I’ll be a leader of recitals, concerts and events at our school. I’m also part of the Hofstra Opera Theater. We do opera scenes each semester and we do a big opera in January over winter break…
